Why circulation understates your newspaper ad reach
Audited circulation tells you how many copies were distributed, but not how many people read them. The average daily newspaper is read by 2.4 people per copy through household sharing. Weekend and Sunday editions often reach 3.0-3.5 readers per copy. Our calculator starts with your audited circulation figure and applies the appropriate readership multiplier for the publication type and edition.
Section readership: the factor most advertisers miss
Different sections of the same newspaper attract very different reader volumes. Research from the Newspaper Association of America shows the front news section reaches 85-95% of all readers, while sports sections reach 50-65% and lifestyle/features sections 60-75%. Placing your ad in a high-readership section can more than double your effective reach compared to a lower-readership section at the same or similar cost.
Pass-along readership and digital access
Physical copies often leave the home, doctors' waiting rooms, cafés, libraries, and offices all generate pass-along readership. Digital subscribers who access content online also count toward total audience. Our model incorporates pass-along multipliers sourced from publisher audit data, giving you a more complete picture of how many people your ad actually reaches.
Frequently asked questions
What information do I need to calculate newspaper ad reach?
You need the publication name (so we can apply the correct audited circulation and readership multiplier), the section, the page position (early, mid, or late in section), and the ad size. These four inputs drive the vast majority of reach variation.
How is readership different from circulation?
Circulation is the number of copies printed or distributed. Readership is the number of unique individuals who read those copies, always higher than circulation. For daily newspapers, the industry average is 2.4 readers per copy; for Sunday papers, up to 3.5.
Does ad size affect reach?
Ad size does not change how many people see the page, but it significantly affects how many notice and process your ad. Larger ads have higher visibility scores and attention times. Our calculator outputs both reach (page-level) and effective engagement (ad-level).
Can I compare reach across different newspapers?
Yes. Run the calculator for each publication and compare the quality-adjusted reach figures. This is particularly useful when deciding between a high-circulation regional paper and a lower-circulation specialist publication with a highly engaged readership.
